John C. Frémont

John C. Frémont was an American explorer, military officer, and politician whose expeditions mapped routes across the West and helped promote U.S. expansion. He served as California’s first U.S. senator and became the first Republican presidential nominee.

Frémont's First Expedition: John C. Frémont's 1842 expedition surveyed the Oregon Trail and the South Pass route through the Rocky Mountains. This survey began the western expeditions that made Frémont nationally known.
