John Cockcroft

John Cockcroft (1897–1967) was a British physicist who shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics with Ernest Walton for splitting atomic nuclei using accelerated protons.

Ernest Walton: An Irish physicist who, with John Cockcroft, used accelerated protons to split lithium nuclei in 1932. Walton was Cockcroft’s close collaborator in the experiment recognized by their shared Nobel Prize.
Cockcroft–Walton generator: A voltage-multiplying circuit that produces high direct-current voltages from lower-voltage alternating current. Cockcroft and Walton used this apparatus to accelerate protons toward lithium nuclei.
Cavendish Laboratory: A physics laboratory at the University of Cambridge, historically central to experimental research in atomic and nuclear physics. Cockcroft and Walton performed their pioneering accelerator experiments there under Rutherford.
Nobel Prize in Physics 1951: The 1951 physics Nobel Prize, awarded jointly to John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton for their work on atomic nuclei. The prize recognized their experimental demonstration of nuclear disintegration using artificially accelerated particles.

Mark Oliphant: An Australian physicist who advanced accelerator research and later directed the University of Birmingham’s radar development. Oliphant succeeded Cockcroft in leadership of Britain’s major wartime radar laboratory.
Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in atomic nuclei and used as a projectile in Cockcroft and Walton’s experiment. Accelerating protons supplied the incoming particles that triggered the lithium reaction.
