John D. Rockefeller

John D. Rockefeller (1839–1937) was an American oil industrialist and philanthropist who founded Standard Oil and became one of history’s wealthiest people.

Standard Oil: An American oil company founded by John D. Rockefeller and partners in 1870 that dominated refining before its 1911 breakup. Rockefeller built his fortune and industrial influence through this company.
South Improvement Company: A proposed 1872 arrangement among oil interests and railroads that promised secret rebates and drawbacks on petroleum shipments. The scheme exposed the freight advantages Rockefeller’s rivals feared Standard Oil would secure.
Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey v. United States: A 1911 U.S. Supreme Court decision that found Standard Oil violated the Sherman Antitrust Act and ordered its dissolution. The ruling legally ended the corporate combination Rockefeller had built.
Rockefeller Foundation: A philanthropic foundation established in 1913 to promote the well-being of humanity through grants and programs. Rockefeller endowed the foundation that made his large-scale giving enduring and organized.
Robber baron: A derogatory term for a powerful nineteenth-century American industrialist accused of exploiting workers or suppressing competition. Rockefeller became one of the figures most often associated with the label.
Petroleum refining: The industrial process of separating crude oil into useful products such as gasoline, kerosene, and lubricants. Refining was the business at the center of Rockefeller’s rise.

Sherman Antitrust Act: An 1890 U.S. federal law prohibiting contracts, combinations, and conspiracies that unreasonably restrain interstate or foreign trade. The Supreme Court used this statute to order Standard Oil’s breakup.
Rockefeller University: A New York City research institution founded in 1901 as the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Rockefeller financed the institute to advance medical research.
Gilded Age: A period of rapid industrialization and stark inequality in the United States, roughly spanning the 1870s through 1900. Rockefeller’s fortune grew amid the era’s expanding industrial wealth and social conflict.
