John Edensor Littlewood

John Edensor Littlewood (1885–1977) was an English mathematician whose work shaped analytic number theory, real and complex analysis, and mathematical physics. His long collaboration with G. H. Hardy produced influential results and conjectures.

G. H. Hardy: Godfrey Harold Hardy was an English mathematician known for work in analysis and number theory. Hardy and Littlewood formed one of the most productive mathematical partnerships of the twentieth century.
Analytic number theory: Analytic number theory applies methods from mathematical analysis to questions about integers and primes. It is the broad field in which many of Littlewood’s best-known results sit.
Littlewood–Paley theory: Littlewood–Paley theory decomposes functions into frequency scales to study smoothness and convergence. Littlewood helped develop this framework with Raymond Paley for analyzing Fourier series.
Prime number theorem: The prime number theorem describes the asymptotic density of prime numbers among positive integers. Littlewood gave a new proof and established that the error term changes sign infinitely often.
Hardy–Littlewood circle method: The Hardy–Littlewood circle method estimates integer solutions to additive problems using integrals over the unit circle. The method emerged from Hardy and Littlewood’s joint work on additive number theory.
Srinivasa Ramanujan: Srinivasa Ramanujan was an Indian mathematician whose formulas and theorems transformed number theory. Littlewood and Hardy recognized Ramanujan’s talent and helped bring his work to Cambridge.
Complex analysis: Complex analysis studies differentiable functions of complex variables and their properties. Its tools underlie Littlewood’s work on power series and the zeta function.
Littlewood's three principles: Littlewood’s three principles are heuristic rules for estimating typical sizes and exceptional behavior in analysis. They capture the estimation instincts that guided much of Littlewood’s research.
Riemann hypothesis: The Riemann hypothesis conjectures that every nontrivial zero of the Riemann zeta function has real part one-half. Littlewood derived consequences of the hypothesis and proved related results about zeta zeros.
Hardy–Littlewood conjectures: The Hardy–Littlewood conjectures are predictions about prime patterns and additive representations of integers. Their conjectures continue to guide research on primes and additive number theory.
