John Flamsteed

John Flamsteed (1646–1719) was England’s first Astronomer Royal and the founding director of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. His precise observations formed the basis of the star catalogue Historia Coelestis Britannica.

Isaac Newton: English mathematician and physicist whose work on motion and gravity transformed natural philosophy. Newton sought access to Flamsteed’s lunar observations for astronomical calculations.

Flamsteed designation: A system identifying stars by constellation and ordinal number, introduced in Flamsteed’s catalogue. The catalogue’s numbering system remains visible in familiar star names such as 61 Cygni.
Nevil Maskelyne: English astronomer who served as Astronomer Royal from 1765 to 1811. Maskelyne’s later Greenwich work continued the institution Flamsteed directed.
Transit instrument: A telescope mounted to measure when a celestial object crosses the local meridian. Meridian transit timings helped Flamsteed determine the right ascensions of stars.
