John Gurdon

John Gurdon is a British developmental biologist who showed that nuclei from differentiated cells can direct development when transferred into egg cells. His work established a foundation for nuclear reprogramming and earned him part of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Somatic cell nuclear transfer: A technique that transfers a somatic-cell nucleus into an enucleated egg cell. Gurdon’s experiments established this method as a way to test whether differentiated nuclei retain developmental potential.
