John Herschel

John Herschel (1792–1871) was a British astronomer, mathematician, chemist, and photographer who extended his father William Herschel’s astronomical work and advanced early photographic processes.

Cape of Good Hope observations: John Herschel’s 1834–1838 astronomical survey from the Cape of Good Hope, covering the southern sky. It completed a major survey of the heavens begun by his father in the northern hemisphere.
Sodium thiosulfate: A sulfur-containing salt used in photography to dissolve unexposed silver halides. Herschel identified its usefulness as a photographic fixer, helping make images permanent.
