John Horton Conway

John Horton Conway (1937–2020) was an English mathematician whose work reshaped finite group theory, combinatorial game theory, number theory, and recreational mathematics.

Finite group: A group with finitely many elements, combining an operation with identity, inverse, and associativity laws. Finite groups provided the setting for Conway’s work on symmetry and the Monster.
Game of Life: A cellular automaton on a square grid in which cells live or die under simple local rules. Conway devised these rules, which produce complex patterns from simple starting states.
Simon Norton: An English mathematician who studied finite simple groups and coauthored work on the Monster with Conway. Conway and Norton jointly investigated the Monster and its modular-function connections.
Monster group: The largest sporadic finite simple group, with roughly 8 × 10^53 elements. Conway helped identify and analyze this exceptional symmetry group.
Combinatorial game theory: The mathematical study of games with discrete positions, legal moves, and outcomes determined by play. Conway developed a theory that treats games as mathematical objects.

Conway–Norton monstrous moonshine conjecture: A conjecture linking the Monster group’s representation dimensions to coefficients of the modular j-function. Conway and Norton revealed the striking numerical link that prompted the conjecture.
Cellular automaton: A discrete system whose cells update their states in parallel according to local rules. The Game of Life is Conway’s most widely known cellular automaton.
Conway's Doomsday algorithm: A mental algorithm for finding the weekday of a given Gregorian date. Conway devised a rapid calendar method using recurring anchor weekdays.
