John II Casimir Vasa

John II Casimir Vasa was king of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania from 1648 to 1668. His reign was marked by the Khmelnytsky Uprising, Swedish invasion, wars with Russia, and the loss of royal authority.

Khmelnytsky Uprising: A Cossack-led revolt against Polish rule in Ukraine that began in 1648 and developed into a prolonged war. The uprising erupted in the year John Casimir took the throne and weakened Commonwealth control over Ukraine.
House of Vasa: A Swedish royal dynasty that also supplied monarchs to Poland and Lithuania in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. John Casimir belonged to the dynasty whose competing claims shaped Polish–Swedish relations.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky: A Cossack leader who headed the uprising against Polish rule in Ukraine beginning in 1648. His revolt became the defining eastern conflict of John Casimir’s early reign.

Charles X Gustav of Sweden: King of Sweden from 1654 to 1660, who led the Swedish invasion of the Commonwealth. His invasion drove John Casimir from Poland and transformed the war into a struggle for survival.
Liberum veto: A parliamentary rule that allowed any deputy to end a Sejm session and nullify its proceedings. The veto exemplified institutional obstacles to the king’s legislative and fiscal agenda.
Treaty of Andrusovo: The 1667 truce between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia that divided contested Ukrainian territories. The settlement formalized major territorial losses during John Casimir’s reign.
Władysław IV Vasa: King of Poland and grand duke of Lithuania from 1632 to 1648 and John Casimir’s older half-brother. Władysław’s death opened the succession that brought John Casimir to power.
