John Lothrop Motley

John Lothrop Motley (1814–1877) was an American historian and diplomat best known for histories of the Dutch Republic and its revolt against Spain.

Eighty Years’ War: The 1568–1648 revolt of the Low Countries against Habsburg Spain, which produced the Dutch Republic. It is the central conflict narrated in Motley’s best-known histories.
The Rise of the Dutch Republic: Motley’s three-volume history of the Dutch revolt, first published in 1856. This is the work that established his reputation as a historian.
