John Monash

John Monash (1865–1931) was an Australian civil engineer and military commander who led the Australian Corps on the Western Front in the First World War.

Battle of Hamel: A 1918 Allied attack in France that captured Hamel in about 90 minutes. Monash used tightly coordinated infantry, artillery, tanks, and aircraft in this operation.
Battle of Messines: A June 1917 British offensive in Flanders that captured the Messines Ridge. Monash commanded the Australian 3rd Division during this carefully prepared attack.
Douglas Haig: British field marshal who commanded the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from 1915 to 1918. Haig promoted Monash to command the Australian Corps in 1918.
University of Melbourne: A public research university in Melbourne, founded in 1853. Monash studied engineering there and graduated in 1895.
Monash University: A public research university established in Melbourne in 1958 and named after John Monash. Its name commemorates Monash’s public service and national standing.
Battle of Amiens: A major Allied offensive launched on 8 August 1918 that began the Hundred Days Offensive. Monash commanded Australian forces in the opening attack, combining surprise with coordinated arms.
