John Napier

John Napier (1550–1617) was a Scottish mathematician and theologian who introduced logarithms and devised Napier’s bones, a manual aid for multiplication and division.

Logarithm: A logarithm is the exponent to which a base must be raised to produce a given number. Napier’s tables made logarithms a practical way to replace multiplication with addition.
Napierian logarithm: A Napierian logarithm is a logarithm based on Napier’s original definition, whose scale differs from the modern natural logarithm. Napier’s original system used a changing reference scale rather than today’s standard logarithmic definition.
Murchiston Castle: Murchiston Castle was the Scottish estate near Edinburgh associated with John Napier’s life and work. Napier carried out much of his mathematical and theological work at his family estate.
Common logarithm: A common logarithm is a logarithm with base ten, widely used in numerical tables and scientific calculation. Briggs’s base-ten version adapted Napier’s invention for decimal arithmetic.

Natural logarithm: The natural logarithm is the logarithm with base e, central to calculus and many models of continuous change. It is now the standard logarithm in mathematics, unlike the distinct scale in Napier’s original system.
Robert Napier: Robert Napier was John Napier’s father, a Scottish landowner and official who served as a prominent figure in the Kirk. His family position connected Napier to Scotland’s landed and Protestant institutions.
