John Nash

John Nash (1928–2015) was an American mathematician whose work in game theory established the Nash equilibrium and whose later research advanced differential geometry and partial differential equations.

Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic interaction among decision-makers. Nash’s equilibrium became one of game theory’s central solution concepts.
Nash’s existence theorem: Nash’s theorem states that every finite game has an equilibrium when mixed strategies are allowed. It established that equilibrium analysis applies even when no pure-strategy equilibrium exists.
Princeton University: A private research university in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746. Nash completed his doctoral work there and developed his equilibrium ideas as a graduate student.
Lloyd Shapley: An American mathematician and economist whose work shaped cooperative game theory and market design. Shapley shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Nash for game-theory research.
Mechanism design: The study of designing rules and institutions to achieve desired outcomes among self-interested participants. Designers use equilibrium analysis to predict how participants respond to proposed rules.
Nash equilibrium: A strategy profile in which no player can improve their outcome by changing strategy alone. This is Nash’s best-known contribution and the concept most closely tied to his name.
Fixed-point theorem: A mathematical result guaranteeing that a function maps at least one point to itself under specified conditions. Nash used a fixed-point argument to prove equilibrium existence.
Nash’s 1950 equilibrium paper: John Nash’s short 1950 paper proving equilibrium existence for finite non-cooperative games. This paper gave the equilibrium concept its first general existence proof.
John Harsanyi: A Hungarian-American economist who developed game theory for situations involving incomplete information. Harsanyi shared the 1994 Nobel Prize with Nash and Reinhard Selten.
Auction theory: The economic analysis of auction formats, bidding behavior, and auction outcomes. Strategic bidding is commonly modeled using equilibrium concepts associated with Nash.
