John Pople

John Pople (1925–2004) was a British theoretical chemist who developed widely used computational methods for molecular quantum chemistry and shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Hartree–Fock method: An approximate method for calculating a many-electron system by treating each electron as moving in an average field from the others. Pople developed practical implementations of this foundational approximation for molecular calculations.
Gaussian (software): A computational chemistry software package for modeling molecular electronic structure and properties. Pople’s group developed Gaussian to make quantum-chemical calculations accessible to working chemists.
Walter Heitler: A German-born theoretical physicist whose work helped establish quantum mechanics as a framework for chemical bonding. His foundational quantum theory helped create the intellectual tradition Pople later made computationally practical.
1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Walter Kohn and John Pople for contributions to computational quantum chemistry. The award recognized Pople’s development of computational methods for studying molecular systems.
Basis set (chemistry): A set of mathematical functions used to approximate molecular orbitals in electronic-structure calculations. Pople’s basis sets made molecular calculations more systematic and computationally tractable.

Molecular orbital theory: A theory that describes electrons in molecules using orbitals spread across multiple atoms. This is the electronic-structure framework his computational methods were designed to calculate.
Møller–Plesset perturbation theory: A perturbative method that estimates electron correlation corrections to a Hartree–Fock calculation. Pople helped establish practical implementations of this approach in computational chemistry.
