John Ray

John Ray (1627–1705) was an English naturalist whose systematic studies of plants and animals helped establish biological classification and species concepts.

Species: A species is a group of organisms treated as a distinct unit in biological classification. Ray helped define species by shared traits and the capacity to produce similar offspring.
Historia Plantarum: Historia Plantarum is John Ray’s major multi-volume survey of plants, published from 1686 to 1704. Its classifications show how Ray organized botanical knowledge across a vast range of species.
