John Searle

John Searle is an American philosopher whose work shaped speech-act theory and debates about intentionality, consciousness, and whether computation alone can produce understanding.

Speech-act theory: The study of how utterances perform actions such as promising, asserting, or requesting. Searle developed a systematic account of how utterances do things as well as convey information.
Chinese room: A thought experiment in which a person follows rules to manipulate Chinese symbols without understanding Chinese. It is Searle’s best-known argument that symbol manipulation by itself does not amount to understanding.
Strong artificial intelligence: The claim that a suitably programmed computer literally has a mind and understands its inputs. Searle’s Chinese room argument directly rejects this claim about programs and understanding.
J. L. Austin: A British philosopher who developed the distinction between constative utterances and performative speech acts. Austin’s lectures supplied the starting point for Searle’s systematic theory of speech acts.

Ordinary language philosophy: A philosophical approach that examines how everyday language works to clarify or dissolve conceptual problems. Searle’s early work arose from a tradition that treated ordinary linguistic practices as philosophically revealing.
Philosophy of artificial intelligence: The philosophical study of machine intelligence, including whether machines can think, understand, or be conscious. Searle’s critique became one of this field’s best-known arguments about machine understanding.
