John Tenniel

John Tenniel (1820–1914) was an English illustrator and political cartoonist whose images for Lewis Carroll’s Alice books became iconic.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Lewis Carroll’s 1865 fantasy novel follows Alice through a dreamlike world of strange creatures and shifting logic. Tenniel’s illustrations established the novel’s enduring visual cast and scenes.
Wood engraving: Wood engraving is a relief-printing technique in which an image is cut into the end grain of a wood block. Tenniel’s book illustrations were reproduced through this precise, mass-printable medium.
