John Tuzo Wilson

John Tuzo Wilson was a Canadian geophysicist whose work helped establish plate tectonics. He explained transform faults and hotspot tracks as evidence that Earth’s plates move.

Plate tectonics: The theory that Earth’s lithosphere is divided into moving plates that interact at their boundaries. Wilson helped establish this framework by showing how faults and volcanic chains record plate motion.
Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain: A volcanic chain in the Pacific whose bend records a change in the motion of the Pacific Plate. Wilson interpreted its age pattern as a record of plate motion over a mantle hotspot.
Arthur Holmes: A British geologist who proposed that mantle convection could drive continental drift. Holmes supplied a possible engine for large-scale crustal motion before Wilson’s plate-boundary synthesis.
University of Toronto: A public research university in Toronto, Canada, founded in 1827. Wilson studied and later taught there, shaping Canadian research in geophysics.

Hotspot track: A chain of volcanic features formed as a tectonic plate moves over a relatively stationary mantle source. Wilson used these age-progressive chains to infer the direction and speed of plate motion.
San Andreas Fault: A major transform fault marking much of the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. It is a prominent example of the transform motion Wilson recognized in plate tectonics.
