Jolof Empire

A Wolof state in Senegambia that united several kingdoms under a central ruler before fragmenting into independent states during the sixteenth century.

Buurba: The title of the ruler of the Jolof Empire, whose authority rested on relationships with subordinate rulers. The buurba headed the imperial order while regional rulers retained substantial power.
