Jonas Salk

Jonas Salk (1914–1995) was an American virologist who developed the first widely used inactivated polio vaccine, tested in a landmark 1954 field trial.

Thomas Francis Jr.: An American epidemiologist who directed the 1954 field trial of Salk’s polio vaccine. He supervised the trial that established the vaccine’s effectiveness.
Inactivated Vaccine: A vaccine made from pathogens rendered unable to replicate while retaining features that provoke an immune response. Salk’s vaccine belongs to this class and uses chemically killed poliovirus.
Polio: A viral disease that can invade the nervous system and cause permanent paralysis or death. The threat of epidemics created the urgent demand for Salk’s vaccine.
Polio Eradication: The global effort to stop poliovirus transmission through vaccination and surveillance. Salk’s vaccine became an early tool in the broader campaign against polio.
