Jordanian annexation of the West Bank

Jordan formally incorporated the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, into the kingdom in 1950 after occupying it in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Only a small number of countries recognized the annexation.

1948 Arab–Israeli War: The 1948 conflict between Jewish and Arab forces in Mandatory Palestine and neighboring Arab states, ending in Israeli independence and armistices. Jordan took control of the West Bank during this war.
Jordanian Nationality Law of 1954: Jordanian legislation defining nationality and citizenship, including the status of many Palestinians connected to the kingdom. It consolidated citizenship arrangements established after the annexation.
Six-Day War: The June 1967 war in which Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem, Sinai Peninsula, and Golan Heights. Israel’s capture ended Jordanian control of the West Bank.
Palestinian statehood: The establishment and international recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state. Palestinian claims to statehood conflict with treating Jordan’s annexation as settled sovereignty.
Jordanian occupation of the West Bank: Jordan’s military and administrative control of the West Bank from 1948 until Israel captured it in 1967. Occupation preceded Jordan’s formal incorporation of the territory.
Jordanian Parliament: Jordan’s national legislature, composed of a Senate and a House of Representatives. West Bank representation in parliament gave incorporation an institutional form.
Jordanian disengagement from the West Bank: Jordan’s 1988 decision to sever administrative and legal ties with the West Bank and relinquish its claim to represent its residents. It formally ended Jordan’s remaining claim to the territory.
Jordanian–Palestinian confederation: A proposed political arrangement linking a Palestinian state with Jordan while preserving separate sovereignty. Confederation differs from Jordan’s earlier incorporation of the West Bank into the kingdom.
All-Palestine Government: A short-lived Palestinian administration established in Gaza in 1948 under the sponsorship of the Arab League. Its competing claim to represent Palestine exposed Arab disagreements over Jordanian rule.
Jordanian citizenship: The legal status conferring membership in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and associated rights and duties. Jordan extended citizenship to many West Bank Palestinians after incorporation.
