Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata : A Spanish colonial administrative division established in 1776, encompassing much of present-day Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Artigas’s political world formed within this Spanish imperial territory.
Oriental Exodus : The 1811 mass departure of residents of the Banda Oriental who followed Artigas after the armistice with Spain. The migration demonstrated the popular loyalty underpinning his authority.
