José María Morelos

José María Morelos (1765–1815) was a Mexican Catholic priest and insurgent commander who led the independence movement after Miguel Hidalgo’s execution and helped shape its political program.

Siege of Cuautla: A 1812 siege in which Morelos’s insurgent forces resisted royalist troops at Cuautla for more than two months. The siege showed Morelos’s ability to withstand a much larger royalist force before breaking out.
Valladolid, Michoacán: A historic city in western Mexico, renamed Morelia in 1828. Morelos was born in Valladolid, whose later name commemorates him.
Ignacio López Rayón: A Mexican insurgent leader who organized resistance after Hidalgo’s death and helped establish the Supreme National American Board. Rayón’s organizing preceded Morelos’s congress and revealed competing approaches to insurgent government.
