Joseph Henry

Joseph Henry (1797–1878) was an American physicist who discovered electromagnetic self-induction and became the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution.

Electromagnetic induction: The production of an electromotive force by changing magnetic flux through a circuit. Henry’s experiments showed that changing current in one coil could induce voltage in another.
Albany Academy: A private secondary school in Albany, New York, founded in 1813. Henry taught and conducted influential electrical experiments there before joining Princeton.
Michael Faraday: An English scientist whose experiments established key principles of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. Faraday discovered electromagnetic induction in 1831, independently of Henry’s experiments.
Telegraphy: The transmission of messages over distance using electrical signals. Henry’s work on relays and electromagnets helped make long-distance electrical signaling practical.
Faraday's law of induction: The law stating that changing magnetic flux through a circuit induces an electromotive force. Faraday’s formulation and Henry’s independent demonstrations are distinct contributions to electromagnetic induction.
Self-inductance: The property of a circuit by which changing its current induces an electromotive force in that same circuit. Henry independently discovered this effect while studying electromagnets and coils.
Princeton University: A private research university in Princeton, New Jersey, founded in 1746. Henry became a professor there in 1832 and continued his research on electromagnetism.
Samuel Morse: An American inventor associated with the electric telegraph and Morse code. Henry’s relay and telegraph experiments helped establish principles used in Morse’s long-distance system.
American Association for the Advancement of Science: A scientific organization founded in the United States in 1848 to advance science and collaboration. Henry served as its first president, helping organize American scientists nationally.
Maxwell's equations: A set of equations describing how electric and magnetic fields are generated and interact. They later unified the electromagnetic phenomena that Henry investigated experimentally.
