Joseph Leidy

Joseph Leidy (1823–1891) was an American anatomist and paleontologist whose comparative study of fossils helped establish vertebrate paleontology in the United States.

Hadrosaurus: A large herbivorous dinosaur genus named from fossils found in New Jersey. Leidy’s 1858 study established it as one of the first dinosaurs described from relatively complete remains.
Comparative anatomy: The comparison of anatomical structures across organisms to identify similarities, differences, and relationships. Leidy used living animals’ anatomy to interpret the bones of extinct vertebrates.
