Joseph Lister

Joseph Lister (1827–1912) was a British surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery, using ideas from germ theory to reduce infections in wounds and operating rooms.

Antiseptic surgery: Surgical practice that uses antiseptic agents to reduce microorganisms and prevent infection. Lister’s defining innovation was applying antiseptic methods to surgical wounds and instruments.
Louis Pasteur: French chemist and microbiologist whose experiments established major foundations of germ theory. Pasteur’s research on microorganisms helped Lister interpret the causes of wound putrefaction.
Agnes Lister: Joseph Lister’s wife and scientific collaborator, who assisted with experiments and documentation. Agnes supported and helped record the work behind Lister’s antiseptic system.
Surgical mortality: The frequency of death following surgical procedures in a defined population or period. Lister’s hospital reports linked antiseptic practice with sharply reduced deaths from infection.
Compound fracture: A fracture in which a broken bone communicates with the outside through a wound. Lister used antiseptic treatment on compound fractures, which were especially vulnerable to infection.
Carbolic acid: A chemical compound, also called phenol, used historically as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Lister used carbolic acid to treat wounds, instruments, and operating-room environments.
James Syme: Scottish surgeon and teacher who trained Joseph Lister and influenced his surgical career. Lister studied under Syme in Edinburgh and later married his daughter, Agnes.
William Watson Cheyne: British surgeon and bacteriologist who promoted antiseptic surgery and worked closely with Lister. Cheyne became one of Lister’s prominent students and advocates.
