Joseph Marie Jacquard

Joseph Marie Jacquard was a French inventor whose punched-card-controlled loom, introduced in 1804, automated the weaving of complex patterns.

Jacquard loom: A loom that uses punched cards to control which warp threads are raised during weaving. Jacquard’s best-known invention translated pattern instructions into automatic thread selection.
Basile Bouchon: A French silk-weaving mechanic who used perforated paper to control a loom in 1725. Bouchon introduced perforated control that later loom inventors adapted.
Charles Babbage: An English mathematician and inventor who designed mechanical calculating engines in the nineteenth century. Babbage proposed using punched cards to direct operations in his Analytical Engine.
Flying shuttle: A weaving device that propels the shuttle rapidly across a loom, increasing weaving speed. It accelerated weft insertion, whereas Jacquard automated the selection of warp threads.
Punched card: A card whose holes encode information for a machine to read. Jacquard’s cards encoded the sequence of thread selections needed for a pattern.
Jean-Baptiste Falcon: A French inventor who replaced Bouchon’s perforated paper with linked punched cards for loom control. Falcon’s card chain was a direct technical predecessor to Jacquard’s system.
Analytical Engine: Charles Babbage’s proposed general-purpose mechanical computer, designed but never completed. Its planned punched-card instructions drew on the idea of machine-readable control used in Jacquard weaving.
Power loom: A loom driven by an external power source rather than by a weaver’s manual force. Power looms mechanized the loom’s motion; Jacquard’s system mechanized pattern control.
Drawloom: A loom that uses cords and an assistant to raise selected warp threads for patterned weaving. The Jacquard mechanism automated pattern selection previously handled by drawloom operators.
Jacques de Vaucanson: An eighteenth-century French inventor who designed automated machinery, including a loom controlled by a perforated cylinder. Vaucanson pursued loom automation before Jacquard and influenced the line of development.
