Joseph Priestley

Joseph Priestley (1733–1804) was an English chemist, theologian, and educator whose experiments with gases helped establish the discovery of oxygen.

Antoine Lavoisier: A French chemist who named oxygen and helped transform chemistry through quantitative experiments. Lavoisier interpreted Priestley’s oxygen experiments within a new account of combustion.
Pneumatic chemistry: The study of gases through experiments that collect, measure, and analyze them. Priestley’s chemical investigations belonged to this emerging experimental field.
Dissenting academies: Independent English schools that educated Protestant dissenters excluded from universities and established institutions. Priestley studied and later taught in institutions built for religious dissenters.

Unitarianism: A Christian tradition that rejects the doctrine of the Trinity and emphasizes the unity of God. Priestley’s theological writings made him one of Britain’s most prominent Unitarian thinkers.
Benjamin Franklin: An American statesman and natural philosopher whose experiments investigated electricity and other physical phenomena. Franklin’s scientific correspondence and reputation helped Priestley enter transatlantic intellectual networks.
Bell jar: A glass enclosure used to contain gases or organisms during experiments. Bell jars helped Priestley test how air changed during combustion and respiration.
