Joseph von Fraunhofer

Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826) was a German physicist and optical-glass maker who measured dark lines in the solar spectrum and advanced precision optics.

Joseph Utzschneider: A Bavarian entrepreneur and public official who co-owned the Optical Institute at Benediktbeuern. He helped establish the institute where Fraunhofer developed precision optical instruments.
Optical glass: Glass formulated and processed to control refraction, dispersion, and optical defects. Fraunhofer’s glass compositions enabled lenses and prisms with unusually precise optical performance.
Fraunhofer lines: Dark absorption lines in the Sun’s spectrum, designated by letters in Fraunhofer’s catalog. These named lines are the best-known result of his systematic solar measurements.
Spectral line: A discrete wavelength feature in a spectrum, produced by emission or absorption of light. Fraunhofer’s catalog made individual spectral features recognizable and comparable.

Diffraction grating: An optical surface with regularly spaced features that separates light by diffraction. Fraunhofer developed grating methods that provided an alternative to prism-based spectral measurement.
