Josephine Butler

Josephine Butler (1828–1906) was a British social reformer who led campaigns against the Contagious Diseases Acts and state regulation of prostitution.

George Butler: An Anglican clergyman and educator who supported women’s education and married Josephine Grey in 1852. Her husband backed her public work and shared her reforming commitments.
Contagious Diseases Acts: British laws that enabled police to subject women suspected of prostitution near military ports to compulsory medical examinations. These Acts were the immediate target of Butler’s national repeal campaign.
Ladies' National Association: A British women’s organization founded in 1869 to repeal the Contagious Diseases Acts. Butler helped build this organization into the campaign’s principal national vehicle.
