Josephinism

Josephinism was the reform program of Emperor Joseph II that subordinated parts of Catholic Church life to state authority while promoting religious toleration and administrative centralization.

Edict of Toleration: A 1781 decree by Joseph II granting limited civil rights to Protestants and Orthodox Christians in Habsburg lands. It embodies Josephinism’s toleration policy while keeping religious practice subject to state rules.
Joseph II: Holy Roman Emperor and Habsburg ruler from 1765 to 1790, known for extensive reforms. His policies gave Josephinism its name and most forceful expression.
Pope Pius VI: Head of the Catholic Church from 1775 to 1799, whose pontificate opposed Joseph II’s ecclesiastical reforms. His 1782 visit to Vienna dramatized the dispute between papal authority and Josephinist policy.

Placet: A legal requirement that government approve certain papal documents before they could be published or enforced. It made the circulation of papal authority within Habsburg lands subject to state approval.
Enlightened absolutism: A form of monarchy in which rulers used centralized authority to pursue reforms associated with the Enlightenment. Josephinism applied this governing approach to the Catholic Church and religious policy.
