Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is a protected area in southeastern California where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, known for Joshua trees and striking rock formations.

Joshua tree: A branching yucca native to the Mojave Desert, with stiff leaves and clusters of pale flowers. These iconic plants shape the park’s namesake landscapes and depend on desert conditions.
Exfoliation (geology): The peeling away of outer rock layers as pressure release and weathering expose underlying surfaces. It contributes to the rounded surfaces of exposed granite in the park.
National Park Service: The United States federal agency responsible for managing national parks and other designated natural and cultural sites. It administers the park and its visitor services, conservation programs, and regulations.
Joshua Tree National Monument: A United States national monument established in 1936 to protect Joshua tree landscapes in southeastern California. The monument formed the core of the later national park.
Mojave Desert: A high-elevation desert of the southwestern United States, marked by cold winters and distinctive drought-adapted vegetation. Its higher, cooler western portion supports much of the park’s Joshua tree habitat.
Spheroidal weathering: Chemical weathering that rounds jointed rock blocks by attacking their corners and edges faster than their faces. It helps turn fractured granite into the park’s stacked, rounded boulders.
Dark-sky preserve: A protected area that limits light pollution to preserve naturally dark night skies. Night-sky protection supports stargazing and reduces impacts from artificial lighting.
California Desert Protection Act of 1994: A 1994 United States law that designated new wilderness areas and elevated Joshua Tree and Death Valley to national parks. This law expanded protection and gave the monument national park status.
Colorado Desert: A low-elevation desert in southeastern California and northwestern Mexico, forming the northwestern part of the Sonoran Desert. Its hotter eastern portion gives the park a contrasting desert ecosystem.
Fault-block mountain: A mountain formed when crustal blocks move along faults, raising or lowering sections of Earth’s crust. Faulting helped shape the park’s mountain ranges and broad desert basins.
