Josiah Willard Gibbs

Josiah Willard Gibbs was an American mathematical physicist and chemist whose work established foundations of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and vector analysis.

Thermodynamics: The study of heat, work, energy, and the macroscopic properties of matter. Gibbs gave thermodynamics a powerful framework for describing equilibrium and energy.
Gibbs free energy: A thermodynamic potential that predicts equilibrium and spontaneous change at constant temperature and pressure. Gibbs’s energy function makes chemical and phase equilibria tractable under common laboratory conditions.
Yale University: A private research university in New Haven, Connecticut, founded in 1701. Gibbs studied and taught at Yale, where he carried out most of his research.
Gibbs sampling: A Markov chain Monte Carlo method that samples from a joint distribution through conditional distributions. Its name honors Gibbs’s foundational role in statistical mechanics, though the algorithm was developed later.
Chemical potential: A thermodynamic quantity measuring how a system’s energy changes when its particle count changes. Gibbs used it to formulate conditions for chemical and phase equilibrium.

Rudolf Clausius: A German physicist who formulated the second law of thermodynamics and introduced entropy. Clausius’s thermodynamic foundations preceded and informed Gibbs’s more general treatment.
Gibbs phenomenon: The persistent oscillatory overshoot near a jump discontinuity in truncated Fourier approximations. The phenomenon shares Gibbs’s name but belongs to Fourier analysis, not his thermodynamic theories.
