Juan Sebastián Elcano

Juan Sebastián Elcano was a Spanish navigator who commanded the surviving ship of Magellan’s expedition back to Spain in 1522, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

Victoria (ship): The sole ship of Magellan’s expedition to return to Spain, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Elcano commanded this ship on its return from the Moluccas to Spain.
Ferdinand Magellan: A Portuguese-born navigator who led Spain’s 1519 expedition to the Spice Islands and died in the Philippines in 1521. Magellan initiated the voyage but did not live to complete its circumnavigation.
Celestial navigation: The practice of determining position or direction using observations of celestial bodies. The crew relied on astronomical observations to navigate across open ocean.
