Jubba River

The Jubba is a river in East Africa formed by tributaries rising in Ethiopia, flowing through southern Somalia to the Indian Ocean.

Genale River: A river rising in Ethiopia that joins the Dawa to form the Jubba. Its confluence with the Dawa creates the Jubba near the Ethiopian-Somali border.
Flood irrigation: A method of watering fields by letting water flow over the soil surface. Jubba water supports irrigated farming in parts of southern Somalia.
Ethiopian Highlands: A mountainous region of Ethiopia containing the headwaters of many major rivers. The Jubba’s principal tributaries rise in these highlands.
Jubaland: A federal member state of Somalia in the country’s far south. Its territory includes much of the lower Jubba valley.
Dawa River: A river flowing through Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia that joins the Genale to form the Jubba. It supplies the Jubba’s second major headwater branch.
Flood: An overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Seasonal rises in the Jubba can inundate settlements and cultivated land.
Somalia: A country in the Horn of Africa with a long Indian Ocean coastline. Most of the Jubba’s course and its mouth lie within Somalia.
Kismayo: A port city in southern Somalia near the mouth of the Jubba River. The river meets the Indian Ocean near this major coastal city.
Jubba–Shabelle basin: The drainage region of the Jubba and Shabelle river systems in the Horn of Africa. The river’s water and flooding are part of this wider regional drainage system.
Drought: A prolonged period of unusually low water availability. Drought sharply reduces river flows and the water available to Jubba communities.
