Judo

Judo is a Japanese martial art and combat sport built around throwing an opponent, controlling them on the ground, and applying submission techniques. Its rules reward efficient technique and the use of an opponent’s force.

Kuzushi: Kuzushi is the act of breaking an opponent’s balance to make a throw easier to execute. Throws begin by disrupting the stable posture that lets an opponent resist.
Kanō Jigorō: Kanō Jigorō was a Japanese educator who founded judo in the late nineteenth century. He created judo by adapting techniques and teaching methods from older martial arts.
Olympic judo: Olympic judo is the rules-based judo competition contested at the Summer Olympic Games. It is the sport’s most visible international competitive format.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu: Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a grappling martial art emphasizing ground control and submission techniques. It developed from judo and places greater emphasis on extended ground fighting.
Judo philosophy: Judo philosophy centers on efficient use of energy and mutual welfare and benefit. Kanō presented these principles as the ethical and educational purpose of judo.
Nage-waza: Nage-waza are judo techniques that throw an opponent to the ground. These standing techniques are judo’s most recognizable way to score decisively.
Kōdōkan: The Kōdōkan is the judo school founded by Kanō Jigorō in Tokyo in 1882. It became the institution through which Kanō established and taught judo.
Judo at the 1964 Summer Olympics: Judo at the 1964 Summer Olympics was the sport’s first appearance at the Olympic Games. Tokyo’s 1964 Games introduced judo to the Olympic program.
Wrestling: Wrestling is a family of combat sports in which competitors use grappling to control or pin one another. Like judo, it uses throws and control, but its rules and permitted submissions differ.
International Judo Federation: The International Judo Federation is the global governing body for international judo competition. It coordinates the sport’s international rules and championship system.
