Judson Dance Theater

Judson Dance Theater was a New York collective whose 1960s performances challenged conventional dance through ordinary movement, collaborative methods, and experimental structures.

Task-based performance: A performance organized around actions or instructions rather than a fixed sequence of expressive steps. Tasks let Judson artists build dances from ordinary actions and rules.
Robert Dunn: An American composer and teacher whose composition classes influenced experimental choreographers in 1960s New York. His composition workshop at the Cunningham studio helped bring the collective together.
Yvonne Rainer: An American choreographer whose work challenged theatricality and virtuosity in postwar dance. Her writing and choreography articulated a defining critique of conventional dance display.

Contact improvisation: A partnered dance practice based on shared weight, touch, and spontaneous movement decisions. Steve Paxton developed this practice after his Judson-era experiments.
Satisfyin Lover: A 1967 Steve Paxton work in which performers walked across a stage and sat or lay down. It made simple walking a sustained concert performance.
