Jujutsu

Jujutsu is a Japanese martial art built around grappling, throws, joint locks, and other techniques for defending against armed or unarmed opponents.

Kuzushi: Kuzushi is the act of breaking an opponent’s balance to make a throw or control technique easier. It creates the opening that lets a jujutsu practitioner throw or control an opponent.
Japanese martial arts: Japanese martial arts are combat and self-defense systems developed in Japan. Jujutsu belongs to a broad tradition that also includes armed and unarmed disciplines.
Sengoku period: The Sengoku period was an era of civil war and political fragmentation in Japan, roughly from the fifteenth to late sixteenth centuries. Warfare and the rise of warrior houses formed part of the setting for early grappling traditions.
Judo: Judo is a modern Japanese martial art and Olympic sport centered on throws, pins, and submissions. Judo grew partly from jujutsu but organizes practice around a modern sporting system.
Self-defense: Self-defense is the practice of protecting oneself from physical danger or attack. Jujutsu techniques are often taught as ways to escape, control, or stop an attacker.
Nage-waza: Nage-waza is the family of throwing techniques used in Japanese martial arts. Throws turn an opponent’s movement and imbalance into a takedown.
Koryū: Koryū are Japanese martial traditions established before the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Many classical jujutsu schools preserve techniques and teachings from premodern martial lineages.
Edo period: The Edo period was the era of Tokugawa rule in Japan from 1603 to 1868. Peace under Tokugawa rule helped jujutsu schools develop and teach within a more stable society.
Aikido: Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art emphasizing redirection, joint controls, and throws. Aikido shares some technical ancestry with jujutsu while pursuing a distinct training philosophy.
Japanese police: The Japanese police are the national and prefectural law-enforcement organizations responsible for public safety in Japan. Some jujutsu-derived methods inform restraint and control training for law-enforcement work.
