Jules A. Hoffmann

Jules A. Hoffmann is a French-Luxembourgish immunologist whose studies of insect immunity helped establish that innate immune-defense mechanisms are conserved across animal evolution.

Innate immunity: The evolutionarily ancient immune defense system that detects pathogens and responds rapidly without antigen-specific memory. Hoffmann’s work showed that this defense system operates through conserved mechanisms in insects and mammals.
