Jules Perrot

Jules Perrot (1810–1892) was a French ballet dancer, choreographer, and ballet master. He co-created the Romantic ballet Giselle and choreographed works including La Esmeralda and Pas de quatre.

Giselle: A two-act Romantic ballet about a young woman who dies after discovering her lover’s betrayal. Perrot co-created its choreography with Jean Coralli for its 1841 Paris premiere.
Jean Coralli: A French dancer and choreographer who worked at the Paris Opéra. Coralli shared the official choreography credit for Giselle with Perrot.
Lyon: A city in east-central France and the country’s third-largest urban center. Perrot was born in Lyon in 1810.
Imperial Ballet: The ballet company associated with the imperial theaters of Saint Petersburg, later known as the Mariinsky Ballet. Perrot served as its ballet master from 1859 to 1869.
La Esmeralda: A ballet based on Victor Hugo’s novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, first staged in 1844. Perrot choreographed this adaptation, which became one of his major works.
Carlotta Grisi: An Italian ballerina celebrated for creating the title role in Giselle. Perrot helped shape the role that established Grisi as a leading Romantic ballerina.
Paris Opéra Ballet: The resident ballet company of the Paris Opéra, founded in the seventeenth century. Perrot trained and performed at the Paris Opéra early in his career.
Mariinsky Theatre: A historic opera and ballet theater in Saint Petersburg, opened in 1860. Perrot’s Russian career unfolded at the theater’s imperial predecessor and its associated company.
Pas de quatre: A ballet divertissement for four ballerinas, created in London in 1845. Perrot brought four celebrated dancers together in this showcase of Romantic ballet.
Lucile Grahn: A Danish ballerina who became one of the leading dancers of the Romantic era. She was one of the four ballerinas featured in Perrot’s Pas de quatre.
