Julia set

For a complex function, the Julia set is the boundary between points with stable iterative behavior and points with chaotic behavior. For polynomial maps, it often has a fractal structure.

Complex dynamical system: A system generated by repeatedly applying a function to points in the complex plane. Julia sets describe where the iterates of a complex map behave unstably.
Complex plane: The plane whose points represent complex numbers with real and imaginary coordinates. Julia sets are subsets of this plane.
Julia set of z²: The unit circle, which is the Julia set of the map z ↦ z². This simple case shows that a Julia set need not be geometrically complicated.
Mandelbrot set: The set of complex parameters c for which the critical orbit of z ↦ z² + c remains bounded. Its points index connected Julia sets in the quadratic family.
Iteration: The repeated application of a mathematical operation or function to its own output. A Julia set is defined through the long-term behavior of repeated function application.
Normal family: A family of functions in which every sequence has a subsequence converging uniformly on compact sets, in the spherical metric. The Fatou set is defined as the region where iterates form such a family.
Julia set of z² − 2: The interval [−2, 2] on the real axis, the Julia set of z ↦ z² − 2. This quadratic example contrasts a connected Julia set with the unit circle.
Bifurcation theory: The study of qualitative changes in a system’s behavior as its parameters vary. Changing a map’s parameter can alter Julia-set connectivity and geometry.
Fatou set: The set of points where the iterates of a complex function form a normal family and behave stably. It is the stable complement whose boundary is the Julia set.
Fractal: A geometric object with detail across scales, often described by non-integer dimension or self-similarity. Many Julia sets exhibit intricate structure at arbitrarily small scales.
