Julian of Norwich

Julian of Norwich was a fourteenth-century English anchorite and theologian whose visions of Christ survive in Revelations of Divine Love, among the earliest surviving books in English by a woman.

Anchorite: A religious recluse who lives in a cell, often attached to a church, under vows of prayer and seclusion. Julian’s enclosure in Norwich shaped the solitary setting in which she prayed and wrote.
Divine love: The love understood in Christian theology as originating in God and sustaining creation and salvation. Julian presents divine love as the ground of creation and the answer to human fear.
Norwich: A historic city in eastern England and the principal setting associated with Julian’s life. Julian was enclosed there at St Julian’s Church, from which her familiar name derives.
