Julien Offray de La Mettrie

Julien Offray de La Mettrie (1709–1751) was a French physician and Enlightenment philosopher who argued that mental life arises from the organized body, especially in Man a Machine.

Materialism: The philosophical view that reality is fundamentally material or wholly dependent on matter. La Mettrie extended this view to thought, treating mental activity as a bodily process.
Man a Machine: La Mettrie's 1747 philosophical work arguing that humans are entirely material organisms whose mental capacities depend on bodily organization. This is his clearest presentation of the thesis that humans are machines.
French Enlightenment: An eighteenth-century intellectual movement in France that promoted reason, criticism, and reform. La Mettrie's controversial materialism developed amid its debates about religion and human nature.
Man a Plant: La Mettrie's 1748 work extending his materialist account of life to plants and the organization of living matter. It develops his machine analogy beyond the human body.

Mechanism (philosophy): The view that natural phenomena can be explained through matter in motion and causal laws. He applied mechanical explanation to living bodies and human thought.
