Julius Nepos

Julius Nepos was a Western Roman emperor recognized by the Eastern Empire, ruling in Italy from 474 to 475 and in Dalmatia until his death in 480.

Leo I: Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474 who appointed Julius Nepos to command in Dalmatia. Leo I’s support helped Nepos build the authority and military position behind his claim.
Western Roman Empire: The western division of the Roman Empire, governed separately from the eastern court after the late fourth century. Nepos held its imperial title even after losing control of Italy.
Fall of the Western Roman Empire: The gradual loss of the Western Roman imperial government, conventionally dated to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus in 476. Nepos remained alive and claimed the western throne after the date commonly used to mark the empire’s fall.
Romulus Augustulus: A Western Roman emperor installed by his father Orestes in 475 and deposed in 476. Unlike Nepos, Romulus held Italy without Eastern recognition and is often named the last western emperor.
Dalmatia: A Roman province on the eastern Adriatic coast, later a center of Julius Nepos’s rule. Nepos’s command there supplied the base from which he advanced on Italy.
Eastern Roman Empire: The eastern continuation of the Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople after the western court’s collapse. Its emperors recognized Nepos and continued to treat him as the legitimate western ruler.
Odoacer: A Germanic military leader who became ruler of Italy after deposing Romulus Augustulus in 476. Odoacer governed Italy while formally acknowledging Nepos’s imperial claim for a time.
Glycerius: Western Roman emperor from 473 to 474, deposed by Julius Nepos. Glycerius was Nepos’s immediate predecessor and later served as bishop of Salona.
Orestes: A Roman general who drove Julius Nepos from Italy in 475 and installed his son as emperor. Orestes’s revolt ended Nepos’s rule in Italy.
Imperial recognition: Acceptance by political authorities that a claimant possesses legitimate imperial status. Eastern recognition distinguished Nepos’s claim from that of rulers imposed by western military factions.
