Junction transistor

A transistor that uses semiconductor junctions to control current flow. The term commonly includes bipolar junction transistors and, historically, junction field-effect transistors.

Bipolar junction transistor: A three-terminal semiconductor device in which a small base current controls a larger collector current. It is the most common modern meaning of junction transistor.
Doping (semiconductors): The intentional addition of impurities to a semiconductor to alter its electrical properties. Doping creates the p-type and n-type regions used in junction transistors.
William Shockley: An American physicist who co-invented the transistor and developed the theory of the junction transistor. His theory and device work shaped the junction transistor’s development.
Transistor amplifier: An electronic circuit that uses a transistor to increase the amplitude of a signal. Junction transistors amplify signals in audio, radio, and measurement circuits.
Field-effect transistor: A transistor in which an electric field controls current through a semiconductor channel. It contrasts with bipolar junction transistors, where both carrier types participate in conduction.
Junction field-effect transistor: A field-effect transistor whose gate forms a reverse-biased p–n junction with its channel. It is the other major transistor type built around a semiconductor junction.
Semiconductor: A material whose electrical conductivity lies between that of a conductor and an insulator and can be controlled. Junction transistors are devices made from semiconductor materials.
John Bardeen: An American physicist who co-invented the transistor with Walter Brattain and later shared two Nobel Prizes in Physics. His semiconductor research helped establish the transistor field from which junction devices developed.
Digital logic: The use of binary-valued signals and Boolean operations to process information electronically. Junction transistors implement the switches and gates used in digital circuits.
Metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor: A field-effect transistor whose insulated gate controls conduction in a semiconductor channel. Its insulated gate differs from the conducting semiconductor junctions in junction transistors.
