Junggar Basin
A large inland basin in northern Xinjiang, China, bounded by the Altai Mountains to the north and the Tian Shan to the south.
Altai Mountains: A mountain range system spanning parts of Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and China. The Altai Mountains form the basin’s northern boundary.
Tarim Basin: A large endorheic basin in southern Xinjiang, China, surrounded by high mountain ranges. It is Xinjiang’s other major basin, separated from Junggar by the Tian Shan.
Junggar Basin oil fields: Oil-producing fields distributed across the sedimentary basin of northern Xinjiang. They supply a major share of the region’s petroleum production.
Central Asian Orogenic Belt: A vast collage of accreted crust and mountain belts formed during Paleozoic assembly of Central Asia. The basin’s basement lies within a region shaped by this ancient tectonic collage.
Tian Shan: A major mountain range extending across Central Asia, including western China. The Tian Shan forms the basin’s southern boundary.
Endorheic basin: A drainage basin whose rivers and runoff do not reach the ocean. Much of the Junggar Basin drains inward rather than to the sea.
Karamay: A city in northern Xinjiang, China, developed around nearby petroleum resources. Its growth is closely tied to oil extraction in the basin.
Junggar block: A tectonic block in northwestern China whose origin and boundaries remain subjects of geological study. Its position beneath the basin helps frame debates about the basin’s early history.
Xinjiang: An autonomous region in northwestern China bordering several Central Asian countries. The Junggar Basin occupies the northern part of this region.
Gurbantünggüt Desert: A cold desert covering much of the central Junggar Basin in Xinjiang, China. It occupies the basin’s interior and is among China’s largest deserts.
