Jupiter mass

Jupiter mass is a unit of mass equal to Jupiter’s mass, used especially to express the masses of exoplanets and brown dwarfs.

Exoplanet: A planet orbiting a star other than the Sun. Exoplanet masses are often reported in Jupiter masses, especially for giant worlds.
Jupiter: The fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet in the Solar System. Its mass supplies the reference quantity represented by one Jupiter mass.
Earth mass: A unit of mass equal to Earth’s mass, used to describe planets and other small astronomical bodies. It is more convenient than Jupiter mass for terrestrial planets and lower-mass exoplanets.
Planet–brown dwarf boundary: The disputed distinction between planets and brown dwarfs, defined using formation history, mass, or fusion capability. Jupiter-mass thresholds inform the debate but do not provide a universally accepted boundary.
Brown dwarf: A substellar object too low in mass to sustain hydrogen fusion in its core. Brown dwarfs are commonly described in Jupiter masses near the boundary with giant planets.

Solar mass: A unit of mass equal to the Sun’s mass, used for stars and other massive astronomical objects. It suits stellar systems whose masses are far larger than a Jupiter mass.
Mass–radius relation: A relationship between an object's mass and radius, shaped by its composition and internal structure. Jupiter-mass measurements paired with radii constrain the interiors of giant exoplanets.
Radial velocity method: A method for detecting orbiting objects by measuring periodic shifts in a star’s spectral lines. It often yields a planet’s minimum mass in Jupiter-mass units.
Astronomical constant: A defined or measured numerical quantity used in astronomy, such as a reference mass or length. Standardized astronomical constants make the Jupiter-mass conversion reproducible.
