Justification

Justification is the epistemic support that makes a belief rational or warranted. It concerns whether a believer has adequate grounds for believing a proposition.

Belief: Belief is an attitude of accepting a proposition as true. Justification is support for belief, not a substitute for the belief itself.
Evidentialism: Evidentialism holds that a belief's justification depends on the evidence available to the believer. It makes evidential support the central source of justification.
Internalism and externalism: Internalism and externalism are rival views about whether justification depends on factors accessible to the believer. The dispute asks whether justification must be grounded in the believer's perspective.
Scientific method: The scientific method is a set of practices for developing and testing empirical explanations through observation and experiment. Scientific methods provide public procedures for supporting and revising empirical beliefs.
Proposition: A proposition is the content expressed by a declarative sentence that can be true or false. A belief is justified with respect to the proposition it accepts.
Foundationalism: Foundationalism holds that some beliefs have basic justification that does not depend on other beliefs. It explains how justification can avoid an endless chain of inferential support.
Skepticism: Skepticism questions whether knowledge or justified belief is possible in some domains or under demanding standards. Skeptical arguments challenge whether ordinary evidence can justify beliefs about the external world.
Testimony: Testimony is information communicated by one person or source to another, often as evidence for a claim. Testimonial knowledge raises the question of when another source justifies belief.
Truth: Truth is the property of propositions that accurately represent how things are. A belief can be justified yet false, so support and truth must be distinguished.
Coherentism: Coherentism holds that beliefs are justified through their coherence within a system of beliefs. It rejects the foundationalist picture of privileged basic beliefs.
