Kaʻahumanu

Kaʻahumanu was a powerful Hawaiian chiefess who became queen consort to Kamehameha I and served as regent during the reigns of Kamehameha II and Kamehameha III.

Kamehameha I: The first ruler of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, who unified the islands under his rule. Kaʻahumanu was his favored wife and a close political ally.
Kuhina Nui: A high-ranking Hawaiian government office with authority comparable to that of the monarch. Kaʻahumanu held this office, formalizing her power as regent.
Kapu system: A system of sacred restrictions that structured authority, social conduct, and religious practice in traditional Hawaiʻi. Its abolition marked a decisive break with the order Kaʻahumanu had inherited.
Keʻeaumoku Pāpaʻiahiahi: A powerful Hawaiian chief and military adviser who supported Kamehameha I’s rise. He was Kaʻahumanu’s father and helped place her within the kingdom’s ruling elite.
Kamehameha II: The second king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi, who ruled from 1819 to 1824. She governed as regent alongside him after Kamehameha I’s death.
Bō Ai Noa: The 1819 abolition of the Hawaiian kapu system of religious and social restrictions. Kaʻahumanu joined the chiefly decision that ended the kapu system.
