Kaapvaal Craton

The Kaapvaal Craton is an ancient, relatively stable block of continental crust beneath southern Africa. Its rocks preserve evidence of early continental growth and some of Earth’s oldest known geology.

Craton: A long-lived, mechanically stable part of continental lithosphere, commonly with an ancient crystalline core. The Kaapvaal is a classic example of this durable continental structure.
Mantle plume: A buoyant upwelling of hot mantle that can cause volcanism and large-scale crustal modification. Plume-related magmatism contributed to volcanic activity recorded in the craton’s ancient belts.

Zimbabwe Craton: An Archean continental block in southern Africa, adjoining the Kaapvaal Craton to the north. Their collision and shared geological history shaped the region’s ancient crust.
Bushveld Complex platinum deposits: Major platinum-group-element deposits hosted by layered rocks of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. They demonstrate the economic significance of magmatism within the craton.
